When an teenage creates club a historic moment in a pivotal European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him minutes in pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his debut.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be astonished to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"He will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining the club's famous youth academy.

He holds both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they play in a official full international.

He has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team chase trophies to come.

After his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
