While Sunbathers Escaped Danger, Widely-Shared Photo Depicts Rescuer Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, describes the famous shoreline as her own backyard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, like many neighbors, heard pops echoing through the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching states. Exiting her residence, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore told her a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the road, speaking to a pair who had hurried up the slope in their swimwear, she heard someone approaching behind her. The person was a beach patrol officer, sprinting towards Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. It was just him running in the path that the crowd was trying to get away from, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He moved towards something that surely every fibre in your being would instruct you to move in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully full throttle running.”

A Symbol of Heroism Amidst Chaos

The photograph taken by Ching of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of heroism in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, law enforcement and paramedics treating dozens of the injured.

Local Response and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to come out of the local area, with the patrol base beside the location of the attack serving as a makeshift treatment center. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen responding bravely, including entering the ocean to assist people in distress.

Following the attack, messages of support were shared. One post shared appreciation for the responders who exhibited that “kindness will always overcome evil”.

The group of lifeguards published a communication, explaining they were “processing what transpired”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful messages and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the compassion for our responders,” the group commented. “When ready, we will share our stories in the hope that it aids those impacted.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many full-time beach safety officers, remarked that the staff performed exceptionally from the second the shooting commenced right into late that evening.

“People have shared so many emotional accounts, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” commented a mayor.

“The team demonstrate selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic coastlines safe for the public, but what we observed on Sunday should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and grapple with the terror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much light we have witnessed in the presence of such hatred.”
