During a major diplomatic initiative, the former US president’s personal representative is scheduled to meet with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other leaders from Europe in Berlin over the coming days, as Washington advocates for a workable plan to end the current conflict.

Peace Discussions and Ceasefire Planning

Germany confirmed it is hosting US and Ukrainian representatives for weekend consultations focusing on a potential ceasefire, prior to a larger meeting involving EU officials and President Zelenskyy planned for Monday. Via a national address, Zelenskyy stated the planned engagement with Trump envoy Steve Witkoff: “Most importantly, I will be holding talks with representatives from President Trump, and there will additionally be meetings with our allies in Europe, with many leaders, regarding the foundation of a lasting peace – a political agreement to terminate the war,” he said.

Russian Demands for a Truce

In parallel, Russian senior diplomat Yuri Ushakov restated that Russia would only give its blessing to a cessation of hostilities after Ukrainian forces pull back from areas in the Donetsk region they currently hold. Ushakov stated that Moscow’s security forces and interior ministry forces would stay in sections of the Donbas region should the area were to become a DMZ under a future settlement – a stipulation considered unacceptable for Ukraine.

Nighttime Attacks Target Ukrainian Infrastructure

Amid a separate escalation, Russia attacked five Ukrainian regions overnight, aiming at the country’s power and maritime facilities, according to President Zelenskyy. He indicated the barrage involved more than 450 unmanned aerial vehicles and 30 missiles. As the mercury close to freezing, the minister of internal affairs, Ihor Klymenko, said over a million residents were left without power.

Furthermore, an attack on the coastal hub of Odesa led to storage facilities catching fire, as stated by a senior Ukrainian official Oleksiy Kuleba. Local officials reported that two individuals were wounded in strikes on the wider region.

Security and Aid Developments

Amid growing worries about the Russian threat, Germany said it will dispatch a group of soldiers to Poland to aid in a initiative to strengthen the country’s border with Belarus. Poland, a key ally of Ukraine, unveiled plans last year to enhance a significant section of its border. The primary task of the German soldiers will be “engineering activities,” a defence ministry representative said.

Regarding a separate event, around 480 passengers were safely removed from a train traveling between the Polish city of Przemysl and Kyiv following authorities received a report about a potential danger. Nobody was injured, and authorities provided no further details on the specific threat. Poland's authorities remain on heightened alert since multiple attempts to sabotage trains on the line linking Warsaw to the border with Ukraine.

In other news, Ukraine’s navy alleged Russia of intentionally targeting a civilian ship from Turkey transporting sunflower oil to Egypt with a UAV on Saturday. The statement claimed the vessel ‘VIVA’ was hit but able to continue its journey, with none of the 11 crew injured.

Additionally, Kyiv welcomed back 114 captives released by Belarus on Saturday, per the country’s PoW coordination centre. The freed individuals will receive healthcare, and those nationals of Belarus who wish will be transported to Poland or Lithuania.
