UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Based on revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, though other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate church.

A World of Personal Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
