A extensive search and recovery operation is currently under way in the Caribbean region for a duo of missing sailboats carrying relief goods traveling from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Naval Rescue Efforts Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has deployed navy personnel and search planes to locate the missing boats, which were carrying at least nine crew members, as stated by a navy statement.

The ships had been projected to arrive in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Aid to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.

"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and each boat are equipped with proper safety equipment and emergency beacons," an official involved in the effort commented.

The nine crew members are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Earlier Humanitarian Delivery

Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a different ship that had transported 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the island.

That vessel, dubbed "a new Granma" after the boat in which Fidel Castro landed in Cuba to begin the revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered solar panels, medicines, baby formula, bicycles and provisions.

Wider International Context

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the island nation was initiated.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 surgeries called off in Cuba due to power shortages.

Foreign policy tensions have intensified lately, with comments from various leaders highlighting the complicated state of relations.

Responding to recent statements, a prominent Cuban official declared that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations were initiated, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.

The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using all of the resources at its disposal to discover the boats and guarantee the well-being of the sailors.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
