Tragedy Hits as Unintentional Blast at Police Station in Indian-administered Kashmir Claims Nine Deaths
A catastrophic blast at a police station in the Kashmir region under Indian control has caused the loss of nine individuals and injuries to thirty-two others, according to official statements.
The event happened when a collection of confiscated explosives inadvertently exploded during processing activities.
Chronology of Events
The blast took place on Friday night at the Nowgam security post, where detonation agents taken from the Faridabad area in the northern territory of Haryana province were being stored temporarily.
Local security director announced that the explosives were scheduled for technical investigation when a "extremely tragic" accident during handling led to their detonation at approximately 23:20 local time.
Official Statements
Law enforcement officials confirmed that this was an "unintentional explosion" and not a militant action. "Alternative theories regarding the reason of this occurrence is unwarranted," emphasized the police chief during a press briefing.
The police station experienced severe damage from the blast, with adjacent buildings also being impacted by the intense detonation.
Consequences and Victims
Numerous cars were "consumed by fire and reduced to charred husks, with wreckage spread across the site," according to authority statements.
"The power of the detonation was so extreme that some body parts were recovered from adjacent homes, approximately 100-200 metres away the police station," stated an police contact.
Most of the fatalities were security officials, along with forensic personnel, two crime scene photographers, and a tailor who was with the team.
Administration Action
The region's Lieutenant Governor expressed sympathies and declared that an inquiry had been directed into the devastating event.
"I have ordered a probe to establish the reason of the unintentional blast. Extremely pained by the loss of precious lives due to profoundly sorrowful accidental blast at Nowgam police station in the Srinagar area. My commiserations to the grieving relatives. I pray for rapid recuperation of the harmed," wrote the leader on digital platforms.
