Prison Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison
He contested the law and the law triumphed.
Two months following receiving a 27-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” the nation's democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last appears headed to prison.
Anticipated Incarceration
The adjudicated coup-monger – who has been subject to residential detention in his estate while a set of judicial steps and challenges play out – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the near future, amidst increasing rumors that he will be moved to a notorious top-security facility.
Previous Comments on Convicts
Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the far-right former soldier displayed scant mercy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“For what reason must we give these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They ought to simply be messed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to finish in prison, you simply need is to avoid rape, kidnap or rob.”
Prison Facility Debate
Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, several of whom this week visited the facility in an apparent bid to discourage the high court from sending him there.
Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, stated he predicted the septuagenarian leader to be jailed in the next 10 days and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal problems – the consequence of a life-threatening assault during the last political campaign – meant it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is extremely serious. He will not be able to manage if they send him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” he added, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the standard of inmate food.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells containing 40 inmates: “That is practically one square metre per inmate.
“We conversed to the prisoners and they grumble, naturally, of the horrible cuisine,” continued the senator.
Supporters Speak Out
Lucas is not the only voice expressing views prior to the ex-leader's expected imprisonment.
Authoring in a leading newspaper, a different supporter, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to see “the greatest political injustice in its history”.
“It represents an injustice that gnaws the spirits of millions of Brazilians,” he stated.
Divided Popular Opinion
This could be correct due to the considerable backing Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. But his predicted imprisonment has also pleased the spirits of millions individuals who believe he ought to be imprisoned for planning to prevent his successor from becoming president – and also scheming to have him murdered.
Congressman Otoni, a representative for the incumbent administration's Workers’ party, said: “Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. Nobody wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to receive dignified care – but proper care in prison. He can’t continue being his own prison warden for his entire life.”
He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long praising the tough treatment of inmates, had abruptly become aware to their privileges. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has always argued that civil liberties are not for lawbreakers – opted to tour a jail to learn what conditions are really like,” he remarked.
“He is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “humiliating, demeaning treatment”.
Potential Prison Facilities
Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which presently houses about thousands of prisoners, his expected destination appears to be a close jail for police officers and other “unique” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).
His potential cell are considerably more adequate than those in the larger jail, although still a distant from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while living in the stunning official residence, around 12 miles away.
As per information, the cell Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – about the size of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 square meter bathroom with a shower and a 12 square meter balcony. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a TV and even a cooler in his quarters as long as they were provided by his family,” the report stated.
Political Reactions
Senator Lucas condemned the talked-about idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his fate in the {
