The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, hesitated to declare this decision right away following his electoral win in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the imperative to dedicating my complete efforts on implementing the platform on affordability the city's residents elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving there, it will always live inside me and my work," he added.

Campaign Controversy

During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

But his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and championed significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his previous Astoria digs.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses exceeds what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
