Move Over, Murdoch: Could Lord Rothermere Poised to Be the UK's Leading Media Mogul?
Waiting twenty years for a fresh opportunity to acquire a coveted business acquisition is a luxury not available to many executives. The Rothermere family, however, takes a more relaxed stance to time.
Whereas most business boards create five-year plans, the family, having built a formidable media conglomerate over over one hundred years, are used to planning in terms of generations.
A Long-Awaited Bid
It was in the year 2004 that the 4th Viscount Rothermere, the distinguished owner of the Daily Mail, failed in his bid to purchase the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph.
In his view, the setback delighted the media magnate because it would have created a stable of rightwing newspapers influential enough to rival the “distinct political influence” of Murdoch’s own titles.
The softly spoken Rothermere, however, was able to adopt a patient strategy. The publications were once again offered for sale in 2023. Since then, two prospective owners have come and gone, both after staff rebellions over their appropriateness. Rothermere has now made his move.
Dynastic Heritage
As a result, the 57-year-old has reaffirmed his family’s obsession with UK press, after his ancestors bought, sold and smashed together some of the most prominent publications of their era.
“Lord Rothermere has got a business head, but he’s not sharply business minded,” stated a media analyst. “It may sound sentimental, but his dedication to journalism is authentic.” I suspect internally, they’ve wanted to unite media businesses that serve centre-right audiences for decades.”
Significant challenges persist before the hereditary peer’s corporate entity can secure the titles. Alongside regulatory and diversity issues, Telegraph insiders are asking how he will provide the £500m valuation. However, his aspirations of creating a right-leaning media giant have been rekindled.
Behind the Scenes
It was a audacious move for a proprietor who takes pride on staying behind the scenes, often noting his readiness to let the combative opinions of the Daily Mail differ from his own gentler, more pro-European conservatism.
With the Rothermeres, though, media acquisitions are a family affair. A portrait of the founder, his ancestor who established the Daily Mail in 1896, dominates Rothermere’s office. One of his earliest memories was of his father, Vere, taking him to the printing facilities.
Journalistic Roots
A young Jonathan would be included in conversations about the difficult start for the Mail on Sunday in 1982. He recalls the stress of the intense competition in 1987 between the London Daily News and his family’s London paper, which he later sold.
He personally dabbled in journalism, working as a subeditor and reporter on the Sunday Mail in Scotland, before focusing on the business side of his family’s group. When his father died in 1998, Rothermere is said to have had about 20 minutes upon returning home from the hospital before company calls began, effectively commencing his chairing of DMGT, at thirty years old.
Business Direction
He has previously divested profitable parts of the business to concentrate on the Mail and other newspaper assets. The Telegraph bid is the most recent indication of his keenness to reaffirm the family’s media stronghold. “This is a 20-year plus target acquisition,” commented a ex-staffer. “He doesn’t want the Mail as the only newspaper asset he leaves for his son Vere.”
His choice to take DMGT private in 2021 has also made the Telegraph pursuit easier. “I don’t have to justify myself to anybody,” he said soon after the decision.
Press Freedom
Attempting to alter the Telegraph’s politics would be uncharacteristic. An ex-editor informed that neither Rothermere nor his father interfered editorially.
“That is the main reason why I turned down very enticing offers to edit the Times and the Telegraph,” he stated. “Frankly, I simply didn’t believe that other proprietors would give me that freedom. It’s difficult to overstate how valuable that freedom is to an editor.”
He continued, “Fleet Street is littered with the corpses of sacked editors who, amid crashing circulations, tried to please their proprietors rather than their readers. The Rothermeres have always understood that. It’s a sacred principle for them that editors are given total editorial autonomy, with the brutally clear understanding that they are dismissed if they produce poor papers.”
Political Concerns
Amid the UK's political landscape appearing to shift to the right, there are predictable apprehensions about combining the Mail and Telegraph at a time when both have been increasing reporting of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.
Many liberal politicians believe the Mail’s abrasive style has become even starker in recent times, pointing to its promotion of narratives pushed by the political leader on immigration and the “woke” agenda. Some believe the Telegraph has experienced an more extreme transformation, frequently publishing radical-right opinion pieces that go beyond those of the Mail.
Financial Questions
Many queries remain about how someone even with Rothermere’s resources has the funds. Most media analysts estimate that a more realistic valuation for the publications is in the range of £350m, but Rothermere is prepared to pay a premium.
DMGT does not have a ready £500m, the sum apparently insisted upon by the existing owners as they seek to recover the debt that gained it control of the titles two years ago.
Future Prospects
He has committed to keep the Telegraph and Mail titles editorially separate, viewing them as serving distinct readerships – quality and popular press. Nonetheless, there are apprehensions inside both publications over reductions and the future strategy, considering the condition of the press sector.
Once more, the dynasty has shown a willingness to take radical steps when required. When Rothermere’s father was trying to rescue an ailing Daily Mail in 1971, he combined it with the Daily Sketch, brutally sacking numerous staff in the aftermath.
Regulatory Hurdles
The culture secretary has requested that the involved parties submit the intended acquisition to the government within three weeks, but the outstanding issues will mean the saga continues well into next year.
“A company that owns the Mail and the Telegraph would have the scale to give both papers a better chance of surviving,” said a former editor. “But, even then, such a company would be a pygmy compared to the giant internet platforms and the BBC from whom most people today get their news.”
Vere, 31, Rothermere’s eldest son, is already being groomed to take control of the family empire, holding a senior role in DMGT’s media business. If his duties will include oversight of the Telegraph is the subsequent phase in the Rothermere media saga.
