Italian consumer advocates are raising alarms over what they describe as completely unjustified price increases for lift tickets this winter season, warning that skiing could become a luxury reserved for affluent individuals.

Significant Cost Rises Throughout the Country

Across the Alpine regions and stunning Dolomite mountains in the northern areas to the ski runs of Abruzzo, prices are poised to increase by as much as 40% compared to prices from three years ago, according to recent analysis.

The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which grants access to all 12 resorts in the exclusive Dolomites, will now cost skiers €86 per day during the current winter. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a daily ski pass is expected to reach €60, following substantial visitor surges last season.

Annual Ticket Prices and Supplementary Charges

At the same time, seasonal ski passes will range from €755 per adult in the Abruzzo region to as much as €1,800 in the Aosta valley.

The cost of renting winter sports gear has similarly risen, along with hotel accommodations and dining expenses throughout alpine destinations.

Consumer Group President Points to Unreasonable Hikes

The consumer association president, heading the consumer protection group, stated that the cost rises—attributed by resorts to increased utility expenses, facility upkeep, and requests for superior gear—were entirely unreasonable and unacceptable.

"Particularly since inflation in Italy are under control and utility costs, which had raised operational costs for ski resort operators in 2022, have stabilized at previous levels," he explained.

He added that prices have climbed to points where less wealthy individuals are being compelled to skip their traditional settimana bianca, or ski holiday, completely.

Visitor Decrease and Wider Perspective

He noted a significant drop in mountain tourism during the 2024-2025 season, with 1 million fewer Italians visiting ski resorts compared to the prior season due to increasing expenses.

Even with these hikes, Italy remains a cheaper option for winter sports fans in the European region compared to neighboring Switzerland, French destinations, and Austrian locations.

The increasing worry over winter sports expenses comes as the country prepares to host the 2026 Winter Games between the first three weeks of February. The nation's top diplomat, Antonio Tajani, announced on Friday that Italy had submitted a proposal to the United Nations urging a "global truce" during the international event.

"With Milan Cortina we must also send a message of peace and dialogue... to halt conflicts during the Olympics," Tajani emphasized.
