Israeli citizens observe second anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations proceed
Citizens have assembled around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The assault resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"The violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed official remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still took place across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held throughout the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the plan.
A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the discussions said that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.
The representative stated the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, due to differences over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the opening period of the deal.
He commented that the talks are "tough and have still not produce any significant progress," but noted that mediators are working hard to reduce the gaps between the both parties.
Critical Issues in Discussions
- An enduring truce
- The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid provision
- After-conflict management of the region
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "No location appears as home anymore and until all the hostages return not a single person will be secure."
"When we see everyone home returned, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence heal," she continued.
In front of the leader's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be alive.
Protester Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to be released. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of the population want the war to finish in exchange for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Situation
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From there, the boom of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the main city, bombardments were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone districts and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.
"Once the night comes, the anxiety appears with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.
"My family are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who rests his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in the urban area said it had taken in the remains of several people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated two more fatalities had been delivered. An individual was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get assistance to the south region, medics said.
