An extensive 60-day voyage circling Australia is being halted following the tragic passing of an elderly woman who was left behind by the cruise liner on a remote island.

The passenger had been trekking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but broke off from the group for a break. The vessel departed without her and went back after some time after the ship staff discovered the passenger was not present.

A large-scale search operation found her remains the following day.

Authorities are looking into the event, together with law enforcement and the state coroner.

Chief Executive of the shipping company announced that guests and crew on the Coral Adventurer were notified that the remainder of the journey had been terminated due to the "unfortunate death and prior technical problems".

Via official communication, he mentioned that passengers would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to arrange the travel back of the individuals via chartered flights".

Officials also published an revised announcement, and said they had "issued a notice to the Commander" prohibiting any further travelers from getting on the liner.

The official said that they would visit the liner in the Australian city upon its arrival.

Sequence of Occurrences

The liner initially left Cairns on October 24th, and was merely two days into the voyage at the point of the 80-year-old's passing. The remote island was the first stop on the journey.

Guests on the ship - who typically pay substantial amounts of dollars to take part in the voyage - were transported there for a day trip with the choice of walking or snorkeling.

Family Response

The daughter of the deceased woman said that her family was "shocked and grieved that the ship left Lizard Island after an scheduled tour without my parent".

Through her comments, she portrayed her mum as an "active elderly person" who was a member of a hiking group.

"From the little information we have been provided, it seems that there was a failure of care and common sense," she stated.

She added that she hoped the investigation would be able to pinpoint what "the company should have done that might have preserved Mother's existence".

"Based on information from the police that it was a very hot afternoon, and she became unwell on the uphill trek," she explained.

"She was asked her to head down, unescorted. Then the vessel departed, seemingly without performing a headcount.

"During some point in that sequence, or shortly after, she succumbed, alone."

Organization Response

Via official communication, the Head verified that the operator was "cooperating fully with officials to assist their investigation".

He mentioned that the company was "deeply sorry that this has happened" and had offered its total backing to the relatives.

Cruise Industry Practices

The ship caters for up to a hundred twenty travelers with forty-six crew, according to official data. It was specifically designed to reach remote locations of Australia's coastline and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - minor craft used to ferry passengers on day excursions.

Incidents such as this are infrequent, and liners have systems to track which travelers are embarking or getting off, according to maritime specialists.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] on the ship just isn't an option," an authority remarked.

Vessel operators regard these procedures very seriously and have "advanced technology in place to stop such incidents from occurring," the expert added.

"This seems to be probably a shocking - and tragic - one-off."
