Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated wealth of $16 billion, making the penalty easily payable for the billionaire owner.
