Extreme heat and intense bushfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures forecast to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across a large portion of the southwestern region.

This situation follow recent fires in another state, which caused the loss of properties and loss of life. Severe heat alerts have also been issued for the coming days in areas within SA and NSW, as a system of high pressure shifts eastward, delivering intense sunshine to much of the area.

The combination of tinder-dry vegetation and unbroken high temperatures presents a dangerous scenario for firefighters.

In another part of the world, a metropolis was plunged into darkness last week after strong gusts compromised the city’s electrical network, with toppled trees bringing down electricity cables.
