A Generous Shopper Took Care of My Food Items When I Couldn't
While in line in the supermarket, I encountered a problem covering the cost of my $100 grocery shop. The issue wasn't due to financial hardship, instead, I'd neglected to shift cash to our daily spending account. I endeavored to shift the cash immediately as I stood in line, unfortunately, the financial app was not working.
My two young children were with me with me, a toddler and a baby, and one of them began crying loudly. With a growing queue of shoppers waiting after me, the store employee saved my grocery list for the items already scanned and held it, then proceeded to help other people.
Nervously, I reached out to my partner requesting that he to make his way to the market bringing his debit card to cover the cost, because it looked doubtful that I would manage to finalizing the transaction. While I was on the phone, a woman waiting in queue settled her own bill – before saying to the employee, “I’ll pay for hers, too.”
I attempted to refuse, but she insisted. Her only response was:
“Just pay it back in the community somehow.”
It meant a great deal to me that a stranger would extend such generosity toward me – it was incredibly thoughtful. That woman could see I appeared anxious and self-conscious at the busy checkout and stepped in to save the day.
We live in quite a small town, but because it all happened so fast, I’m not exactly sure who the person was that covered my shopping, thus, I have not had the chance to express gratitude.
But I did honour that kind woman’s request. Back then, I had a whole bunch of baby stuff available through social media sales. Yet after the supermarket encounter, I removed the listings and posted in a local “buy swap sell” group allowing me to donate all items without charge to an individual facing hardship. A female guardian of an infant in foster care accepted my proposal, therefore, I am pleased that I could pay forward the kindness.
